Founded by designer Matthew Williams in 2015, 1017 ALYX 9SM quickly gained notoriety for its cutting-edge approach to fusing luxury and streetwear. Commonly referred to simply as Alyx and pronounced “A-Lyx,” the brand began as a womenswear label before adding a menswear division in 2017. Known for its cutting-edge technical fabrics and industrial hardware elements, some of Alyx’s most standout pieces include a roller coaster safety buckle and military-inspired chest straps. Matthew Williams was no stranger to the fashion industry when he created Alyx, named after his daughter. In a previous life, the designer worked with musicians Kanye West and Lady Gaga. Williams also formed a DJ collective with Virgil Abloh and Heron Preston before launching Alyx as his solo project.
